Powerful Etudes for Students (and Pros)

From Beginners to Professionals, we all benefit from etudes as part of a balanced violin diet. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Beginners: Sally O’reilly’s Fiddle Magic, a fun, colorful, and imaginative book of short exercises to help beginner students explore finger placement and independence, the fourth finger (!!), left hand pizzicato, harmonics, double stops, and more.

  • Intermediate Players: Josephine Trott’s Melodious Double Stops. Pleasing and melodious double stops exercises that use lots of open strings to support listening and intonation.

  • Advancing Players: Kreutzer, 42 studies. A staple!

  • Advanced Players: Rode 24 Caprices. One etude in each key, these caprices cover a trove of sound, left hand, bow, and technical needs.
